Regina Lang from Creative Insights recently spoke with members to promote police awareness.  She also helped educate them about resolving conflict and promoting therapeutic change among groups. She will be visiting numerous community centers in the west end throughout the summer and plans to have an art exhibit of the collected works toward the end of July.

The Torch Club is a powerful vehicle through which Club staff can help meet the special character development needs of younger adolescents at a critical stage in their life. The 2011 Torch Club focus was on environmental stewardship. In an effort to be more environmentally friendly the Shawnee Torch Club members implemented a recycling program at their Club. By posting signs around the Club and on trash cans the Club members are spreading the word about recycling.

Stone Carving at Shawnee

Local artists-in-residence Al & Penny Nelson shared lessons about stone carving with Shawnee Club members. Each Tuesday in March they worked with Club kids carving a beautiful new limestone sign that was installed outside the Club. The first lesson was about the safety of carving techniques and the history of limestone. Club members started carving and made necklaces (designed by them - executed by Al) with the scrap stone. Who knew stone carving could be so much fun!

The University of Phoenix Louisville Campus is our newest partner! Their staff, students and faculty will assist the Shawnee Club in a number of ways. March 7 will kick off their book drive which will provide books needed for the new book club they are organizing. In addition, 1-2 volunteers will spend time each week at the Club reading with members. These kinds of partnerships are so important to the Clubs and to our kids. Thank you, University of Phoenix Louisville Campus!

Shawnee Club male teens are nearing the end of Passport to Manhood, their 14 session journey of maturation and growth which focuses on specific aspects of character and manhood through highly interactive activities. This program is led by Keith Jones, a familiar face and respected Shawnee volunteer.

Passport to Manhood is part of a larger effort – Shawnee Teen Initiative – which is funded in part by Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government. This initiative is designed to enhance teens’ leadership skills, foster strong character and help them make healthy decisions. Other funded programs from this grant include Keystone Club, SMART Girls and Youth of the Year.

The Shawnee Torch Club is comprised of youth, ages 10 - 13, that meet each Wednesday to discuss activities they plan to implement throughout the neighborhood. The kids recently participated in Olmstead Park's Conservancy clean-up project, which consisted of members picking up trash in Chickasaw Park. These Torch Club members are also planning a canned food drive during the holiday season and are scheduled to be a part of the Basket Giveaway event which was part of the Shawnee Boys & Girls Club Thanksgiving dinner on November 18.

The current Torch Club members voted Terrell as their President and leader. Terrell is in 7th grade and is not only a great leader he is also the current Shawnee Club's Youth of the Month!

Torch club members know how to have a good time too! During the month of October they took a trip to Joe Huber's  Farm in Indiana to pick pumpkins. After carving and decorating the pumpkins they were put on display for the Shawnee Club Halloween Party on October 29.

Keith Jones is a Louisville Metro firefighter and serves the community by saving lives. When Mr. Jones is not saving lives from fires he’s saving lives by volunteering at the Club. He volunteers on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Mr. Jones volunteers his time by helping with Passport to Manhood, community projects like the Olmstead Parks clean-up project and coming on Saturdays to help prepare kids for the A.C.T.

Mr. Jones has done so many wonderful things while serving the kids. He shows them love and teaches them about respecting others as well as themselves. He gives the kids hope. This past school year, Mr. Jones helped a young lady increase her A.C.T. score from 16 to 22 and she now is in college making a difference. Mr. Jones has children of his own that attend the Club but finds the time to come and teach and be there  for other kids! During this past summer, Mr. Jones went on fieldtrips and helped serve lunches. Still today he comes and serves food during Kids Café.

The children love to see Mr. Jones come with his big bright smile and his faithful service attitude. Mr. Jones has made a huge difference here at the Club and we are proud to have him.

Shawnee Club Club Team Wins 1st Place At Graduate To Go Business Camp

The first annual Taco Bell Foundation for Teens "Graduate to Go" Business Camp was held at Yum! Brands Inc. headquarters on July 27th and 28th.

The Graduate to Go business camp was a two-day, overnight competition where teens worked in teams to develop business plans and compete for micro-loans to start-up their companies. Teens had the opportunity to interact with entrepreneurs and participate in workshops on business etiquette, marketing, finance, operations and presentation skills.

We are proud to announce that, out of the six clubs that participated, the Shawnee Boys & Girls Club won first place. The Shawnee Club team consisted of six young men (Dieontre S., Charles S., Terrence S., Deandre S., Kevon M. and Tevaughn S.) These young men represented their families and communities well and should be congratulated for their accomplishments.

A special thanks to a special someone!

Special thanks to Lindsay Moreman who has spent some time over the past few months with kids at the Shawnee Club. Lindsay, a local designer/stylist/artist, is working with our art instructor, Alice Collins, to introduce Club members to various forms of art. They have been exploring photography in particular. In addition, Linsday worked with the kids to cleanup the Club’s garden. They weeded and then planted a new crop of tomatoes, cucumbers and watermelon. The kids will tend the garden and harvest its bounty!

BGCK appreciates the time and talents of Lindsay and others like her who spread ideas, new experiences and positive energy to our Club kids. Thank you, Lindsay!

Kids experience "champion-like" dinner from 1980 University of Louisville basketball team

Very seldom do kids have the chance to meet greatness. Well for the Shawnee Boys and Girls Club, they had that opportunity when members of the 1980 NCAA National Champion University of Louisville men's basketball team visited the Club to interact with members and help serve dinner.

Head coach Denny Crum, along with team members Wiley Brown, Roger Burkman and Tony Branch, spent a few hours talking with the kids and staff, telling stories of their playing days and even passing around their 1980 championship ring for everyone to see. They topped off the exciting evening by serving the kids a nice meal.

The Shawnee Club, and the rest of the Boys and Girls of Kentuckiana, want to pass along a very special thank you to Coach Crum and his players and staff for stopping and sharing their wisdom and time with out kids!
