Meet Jayden B.! He is 6 years old and attends the Shawnee Club. He has been full of energy from the first day he walked through the door. You can find Jayden playing in the gym, coloring the sidewalks with chalk or goofing around with his Club friends. Shanta M., Club work-study student said it best that “to be around Jayden is a joy. You can always count on him to give you a good laugh.”

Did you know that approximately 9,000 students enrolled in Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) cannot read at grade level? By implementing the Every 1 Reads More initiative, we are hopeful to make a huge impact in the lives of these children.

Art Anyone?

What fun experiences our Club kids are offered on a regular basis, not the least of which take place in our Art Rooms! Recently, Shawnee Club members created ceramic masterpieces with help from local artisan, Susan Hatcher. Special thanks to the Kentucky Museum of Art & Craft for their partnership with the Shawnee Boys & Girls Club. And thanks to the Norton Foundation for helping make this partnership possible!

Shawnee Club members were left in stitches by volunteers from The Speed Youth Apprentiship Program on June 29th and 30th. The Speed Art Museum’s program involved skits by the volunteers as well as lessons in stitching and quilting. Club members each created their own quilted square and canvas bags using their new patterning and stitching skills.

On June 14th, the Shawnee Club kicked off its Every 1 Reads Summer Reading Program. It's designed to provide members with support, resources and encouragement to continue their reading during the summer and to keep them on track for school in the Fall. Participants will take at least 3 fieldtrips a month to local libraries and book stores to facilitate their hunger for more books! With this program, 70% of participants will read at least 10 books over the summer. This summer the Shawnee Club is really preparing Club kids for great futures.
